Our clubs history

About Kung Fu in Derby

In 1973 the British Kung Fu Association was formed by Master Yau and he and his group of instructors began opening clubs, teaching the art all around the country.

Lau Gar came to Derby in 1974, the first club was at Hardwicks Girl School in Normanton under Steve Perry, he was one of George Shaws' instructors from Stoke on Trent . Rajko started training in the early part of 1977, he trained there for a few more months then Steve moved the club to Lancaster Sports Centre.

After a few months Bernard Chong came to take over. He continued and made a real success of the club, its growth was so good that he decided to open a full time martial arts centre. This he did in 1981 when the club relocated to Saddler Gate.

After many Successful years Bernard Re-tired and Rajko took over. Rajko continued in the same pattern as Bernard, but in 2002 we relocated the club due to a redevelopment of the site, so we came to the Strand which is just around the corner.

About Kickboxing in Derby

In order to trace the History of I.A.K.S.A. we must look back to the origins of modern American kickboxing.

It was in 1974 that the professional karate association (P.K.A) was founded to promote kickboxing as we know it today One of the founders of the P.K.A ,Mike Anderson came to Europe in 1977 to found the original W.A.K.O ( World All Styles Kickboxing Organization) Despite the fact that the W.A.K.O. became very strong after the 1983 Word Championship's in London , it was decided that the members change the name to International Amateur Kickboxing Sports Association.

Today I.A.K.S.A. is the Strongest Amateur kickboxing organization in the world with many of its member countries recognized by their national Olympic committees. The I.A.K.S.A started in Derby back in 1986. At the Lau Gar Centre it has gone from strength to strength producing champions in both semi and full contact national and International level.

The Main chief instructor in the Kickboxing is Rajko Dokic who is a 4th Degree Black belt.
